Chris Brown police chief resigns amid community service scandal

The chief of police who supported R&B superstar Chris Brown and signed off his community service hours that are now being disputed by Los Angeles prosecutors has resigned.

Billboard.com reported that Bryan T. Norwood handed in his resignation today (February 12) to to Mayor Dwight C. Jones, who said: "We've reached a mutual agreement that his time as Richmond police chief has come to an end."

Norwood and his department have come under fire recently from LA prosecutors for their handling of Brown's community service, which came about after his assault on Rihanna back in 2009.

The 'Don't Wake Me Up' hitmaker was allowed to complete the designated hours in his home state and Norwood personally wrote to Judge Patricia Schnegg, who was dealing with the case at the time, confirming that Brown successfully completed approximately 202 days of supervised manual and community labor in the Richmond area.

Last week, Deputy District Attorney Mary Murray filed papers that claimed Norwood's official report on Brown's community service work was "at best sloppy documentation and at worst fraudulent reporting", implying that the records might have been faked.

The singer will appear in court on April 5 to face questions about his disputed service hours.
