Record Store Day album sales increase by 60% on last year

The sales of Record Store Day albums this year was up 60% on that of 2012.

A plethora of music acts released limited edition vinyls for one day only on April 20 as the UK celebrated independent record shops.

Musicweek also reports that Record Store Day singles sold 20% more than last year as fans flocked to shops to splash out on music.

Record Store Day UK boss Spencer Hickman said about 2013's success:

"Indie record shops pulled out all the stops once again to make Record Store Day UK a huge success. They proved yet again indie stores are more than just shops – at their best they are a focus for the passion, the excitement, the stubborn belief in the power of great music which is the hallmark of the true music fan."

Some of this year's special limited releases included David Bowie's 'The Stars (Are Out Tonight)' on white vinyl and a 7" Biffy Clyro record printed in marble.
