Jailed Pussy Riot member hospitalised following hunger strike

Pussy Riot member Maria Alyokhina, who is currently in prison, has been hospitalised after a 7-day hunger strike that she started because she was denied permission to attend her own parole hearing.

Officials stated that the reason she wasn't allowed to go to the hearing was simply that she hasn't repented for her crimes so as an act of rebellion and defiance, Alyokhina stopped eating at the jail in Russia's Ural Mountains region where she is being held.

3 members of Pussy Riot were imprisoned back in 2012 for staging a ‘punk prayer’ protest against President Vladimir Putin in Moscow's main cathedral although one of the women, named Yekaterina Samutsevich, was freed last October. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova remains in jail.

Sir Paul McCartney was so moved by the case that he wrote several letters to Russian officials begging for their freedom, but his pleas fell on deaf ears.
