"Down with DOMA": Music stars react to overturning of the Defense of Marriage Act

Earlier today (June 26), it was revealed that the Defense of Marriage Act had finally struck down in America.

DOMA was the federal law that banned the U.S. government from recognising same sex-marriage and key provisions of it have now been eradicated, giving legally married gay and lesbian couples the same rights as opposite-sex couples.

The stars of music flocked to their social networking sites to express their excitement at the progressive news and singer Adam Lambert tweeted:

"Down w DOMA! Something to be very proud of this upcoming July 4th. We are making beautiful progress for Equality! #proud."

'Heart Attack' beauty Demi Lovato wrote: "Gay, straight, lesbian, bi.. No one is better than any one else. What an incredible day for California AND for equality."

Lady Gaga also made a rare Twitter appearance to acknowledge the development, writing: "We stand tall today. #DomaStruckDown So many fought for so long. Be proud, the prejudice are now the minority."
