Janelle Monáe: 'I have encountered sexism in the music industry'

'Cold War' hitmaker Janelle Monáe has admitted that she feels pressured to promote herself in a particular way as a woman in music, and doesn't like feeling as though her control over her own image is slipping.

During an interview with the NME, Monáe expressed her opinions on sexism in the music industry and confessed that it's something she sees far too often:

"I absolutely have encountered sexism in the music industry. I don't look at myself as a victim, some people just aren't taught any better [...] It's up to us as women not to accept it and lead by example. And that's what I've always tried to do with music and from the way that I dress."

"I won't allow myself to be oppressed and I won't allow myself to be a slave or controlled by anybody's own belief system. It's important that we set up a better future, a better world, for the next generation."

Speaking about her sense of style, the singer explained that she avoids wearing dresses and heels almost as an act of rebellion so that she can "peacefully remain in control of my body."
