Charlie Simpson slams TV talent shows: 'Contestants come away worse off than before they began'

Singer Charlie Simpson, who found fame with pop-rock boyband Busted before moving on to Fightstar, has revealed that televised vocal talent shows are damaging to both the music industry and to contestants' career paths.

Speaking to Absolute Radio backstage at Barclaycard Presents British Summertime Hyde Park Festival in London recently, the musician explained that being a contestant on a show like 'The Voice' or 'The X Factor' is usually more detrimental than helpful to an individual's music career:

"I don't think that it helps the artist because they'll have their 15 minutes of fame. If you look at the hit rate of these artists it's very slim. I can maybe think of three or four who have carved out a good career for themselves. The majority of people who come off those shows and have that initial success before it fades away are left in a worse position from where they started."

"The people making the shows don't care because they're making their millions. It's a bit of a viscous circle but it's entertainment and people enjoy it, so I'm not gonna take that away from people, but It's just not my thing."
