Dermot O'Leary on 'X Factor': 'It weeds out fame hungry people and leaves those ready to work hard'

Presenter and television personality Dermot O'Leary has opened up about how 'The X Factor' works to highlight people who are dedicated to making a genuine career for themselves.

During an interview with Digital Spy, he explained that the auditions process may seem fairly brutal to viewers but it does a great job of flagging up people who are just after fame, which is essentially what the competition doesn't need:

"The whole show is about people who have in some shape or form tried to get their music out there. This show is about grafters."

"Of course, we also get people who just want to be famous. But most of the time they get thrown out pretty early on and we're left with the people who work really hard. I think that is what strikes a chord with the people."

Auditions for the upcoming new season of 'The X Factor' took place yesterday (July 15) in London and they saw the return of judges Nicole Scherzinger, Louis Walsh, Gary Barlow and Sharon Osbourne.
