Madonna, Adele and One Direction sign letter of support for Pussy Riot

Over one hundred musicians including the likes of Madonna, Adele and One Direction have signed a letter of support for Pussy Riot.

Three members of the Russian punk collective - Maria Alekhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samutsevich - were jailed last year after being found guilty of hooliganism on the grounds of religious hatred.

They performed a protest song against President Vladimir Putin in a cathedral in Moscow and their trial gained worldwide attention.

30-year-old Samutsevich has since been released from jail, with Alekhina and Tolokonnikova due to attend  parole hearings on Wednesday (July 24) and Friday (July 26) respectively.

Over one hundred musicians have signed a letter in conjunction with Amnesty International calling for the duo's release from prison, with artists such as Sir Paul McCartney, U2, Coldplay and Bruce Springsteen adding their name to the cause.

The message states that "while understanding the sensitivities of protesting in a place of worship, we ask that the Russian authorities review these harsh sentences, so that you may return to your children, your families and your lives."

The full letter and its list of supporters can be seen here.
