Filmmaker Daisy Asquith asks "awesome" One Direction fans to stop "spreading hate and lies"

The director of a controversial documentary about One Direction fans has responded to fervent backlash of her programme.

Crazy About One Direction aired last night (August 15) in the UK on Channel 4 and it examined the group's fanbase.

However, it came under fire from fans for focusing on negative aspects of One Direction's fandom and seemingly misrepresenting Directioners in the process.

Singer Liam Payne then tweeted against the documentary, which he suggested was "bullsh*t".

Daisy Asquith, who made the documentary, said that she still likes One Direction fans despite the backlash, but requested that they stopped giving her abuse. She said on Twitter:

"[Directioners], you are awesome. Hold steady and don't spread hate and lies."

She previously tweeted: "I [love] Directioners. Now stop hating, you're letting yourselves down."
