Macklemore: 'If YouTube had been around when I first started rapping, I'd have been picked on'

'Can't Hold Us' hitmaker Macklemore has revealed that while the Internet proved to be incredibly useful where independently launching his own career was concerned, he's glad YouTube didn't exist when he first started out.

Speaking to Elliott Wilson on 'CRWN' recently, he explained that when he first began rapping his voice was very different to how it sounds now so thinks that uploading his material to YouTube as a teen would have been more damaging than helpful:

"I didn't really know that my voice sounded like a chipmunk when I was 15 years old. I thought I was dope. If YouTube had been around, I would have got shat on back then."

He added that finding fame later when he was older was ideal because he had the opportunity to grow up and make his own mistakes without the press intruding on his lifestyle: "People aren't given the chance to grow up. They aren't given the chance to be humans and make mistakes and learn. I'm here. If I had had this level of success at 22 I don't know if I would be here."
