Simon Cowell could "never have predicted" One Direction's success

Simon Cowell has admitted that he didn't know One Direction would become so big.

The music mogul helped piece together the band from five solo contestants on the X Factor back in 2010.

They have since gone on to release two massive albums and have become a worldwide phenomenon.

Speaking on Ellen DeGeneres's talk show, Cowell confessed that luck, good timing and talent has helped propel One Direction into the music stratosphere. He said:

"I could never, ever, ever have predicted this. It was like one of those moments where luck just plays in your favour. They were leaving the competition and I literally on a whim said 'You know what, these five guys should be in a band'."

Cowell continued: "And they just gelled immediately. They're smart, they're charming and they are really talented. And then over three years they've just been incredible."
