Star Wars theme named top movie soundtrack

John Williams' Star Wars theme has been voted as the UK's favourite movie soundtrack.

The classic music came out top in a poll run by BBC Radio 3 to find the nation's top film themes.

Williams' score beat off the likes of Ennio Morricone's The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, which came second, and Leonard Bernstein's third-placed West Side Story.

Other films to be represented in the list's top ten include The Dark Knight Rises, Grease and The Sound of Music.

John Williams' legendary Star Wars main theme meanwhile was conceived for first film from the franchise, which was released in 1977.

The composer meanwhile recently delighted fans by confirming that he would score the upcoming Star Wars movie Episode VII.
