British quartet The 1975 have topped a Radio 1 poll with their track ‘Chocolate’ being voted the best song played on the station for the past five years.

The Manchester-based band came out on top after listeners were asked to vote for their favourite track of the last five years.

Voters were able to choose from a list of 100 songs which was divided equally between 20 tunes from 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010 and 2009 each.

Just behind The 1975 in the poll are Bastille with their single ‘Pompeii’.

Talking about the results of the survey, Radio 1 DJ Greg James stated: “It's great that a load of our favourite new British bands like Bastille and The 1975 are so high up on the list.”

George Ergatoudis, Radio 1's head of music, also commented on the poll saying: “The voting has been going on all month and artists have been rallying their fan bases - it has been fascinating seeing the votes come in.”
