CHVRCHES' Lauren Mayberry takes stand against online misogyny

CHVRCHES singer Lauren Mayberry has received support after speaking out against the misogynistic behaviour she encounters online.

Speaking in the Guardian, the Scottish electronic star lamented the demeaning messages of a sexual nature she often receives from men via the internet.

Whilst acknowledging the need for free speech, Mayberry - who is the only female in the group - said: "What I do not accept, however, is that it is all right for people to make comments ranging from "a bit sexist but generally harmless" to openly sexually aggressive. That it is something that "just happens". Is the casual objectification of women so commonplace that we should all just suck it up, roll over and accept defeat? I hope not. Objectification, whatever its form, is not something anyone should have to "just deal with".

She concluded: "My involvement in this discussion is not motivated by a self-righteous or self-pitying urge. My hopes are that if anything good comes out of this, it will start a conversation, or continue the conversation which is already happening, encouraging others to reject an acceptance of the status quo, and that our band can continue to do what we are doing in our own way and on our own terms. For us, this has always been – and hopefully will always be – about the music, and that is what we will be getting back to now."

Her Guardian article has received huge support online, with Tegan and Sara tweeting: "IMPORTANT READ, WELL SAID LAUREN."

CHVRCHES meanwhile hit No.9 on the UK albums chart on Sunday (September 29) with their debut effort 'The Bones of What You Believe'.
