Janet Devlin felt forced to cry on 'The X Factor' and says it was a "baptism of fire"

Singer and former 'X Factor' finalist Janet Devlin has revealed that she felt forced to show emotion while competing in the TV vocal contest as it made the show more entertaining for viewers.

Speaking to London's Metro newspaper, the flame-haired singer explained that the producers actively encouraged her to cry on set to make the programme more compelling:

"I was on that roof [in Miami] for several hours. I was being quite emotionless, which got on their nerves. They said, 'How do you expect anyone to connect with you unless you let your guard down?' Eventually, I cried. It was horrible."

She also spoke briefly about the death of her grandfather, which happened during her time on 'The X Factor', and added: "They asked what happened, I cried, and that was it. I needed to address it because the fact he'd passed away had already trended on Twitter."

"It taught me that opening up sometimes isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's a lot for a 16-year-old to deal with, to open yourself up to millions of people like that."

Despite her reservations about taking part in the show, Devlin confessed that she did it in order to expose herself to an audience and to try to get enough money to make an album: "I wanted to do it to earn money to make the album. If you stay longer, I think you're automatically signed to Syco. I'd rather have a choice. Everyone wants choices."
