Billboard Awards producer defends choosing Madonna to honour Prince

Earlier this month, it was confirmed that Madonna would pay tribute to the late Prince at the Billboard Music Awards on May 22 in Las Vegas, but not everyone is on board with this idea.

Lots of people have criticised the decision and it has even sparked a petition on Change.org.

Mark Bracco, the executive producer of the upcoming awards ceremony, defended his decision in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday and explained that the Queen of Pop was a very appropriate choice for the tribute:

"Listen, I think everybody is entitled to their opinion and everyone can have their own opinion, but I will say that we are honoured and could not be more excited for Madonna to be on the show and to pay tribute to someone that was her friend and her peer and her colleague. I think it's going to be fantastic."

He added: "It's going to be very, very intimate and very respectful, and I think it's something that is really going to pay tribute to Prince as the incredible, groundbreaking artist that he was and the influence that he had on music."

Other performers at this year's BBMAs include Justin Bieber, Celine Dion, DNCE, Fifth Harmony, The Go-Go’s, Demi Lovato, Shawn Mendes, Pink, Britney Spears, and Troye Sivan. There will also be a special collaboration from Nick Jonas and Tove Lo, along with another from Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani.
