Madonna: 'I wasn't popular growing up'

The Queen of Pop has revealed that she was never popular while she was growing up, but she turned it into a positive thing as it gave her a lot of time to put her plans for fame into action.

She wrote an editorial piece for Harper's Bazaar recently and explained that she was ostracised by her peers, which fuelled her determination to succeed:

"Most people thought I was strange," she admitted, referencing the fact that she didn't shave her legs or armpits, "like a Russian peasant."

"When you aren't popular and you don't have a social life, it gives you more time to focus on your future. And for me, that was going to New York to become a REAL artist."

Along with making the shocking revelation that she was raped and held at gunpoint in New York City, she added that moving to Manhattan made her feel "like a warrior": "I felt like I had plugged into another universe. I felt like a warrior plunging my way through the crowds to survive. Blood pumping through my veins, I was poised for survival. I felt alive."
