Mariah Carey dismisses retirement talk: "I will always make music"

Mariah Carey has denied speculation that she might quit music in the near future.

The singer raised eyebrows recently when she told Watch What Happens Live that her next record, due out this year, might be her last.

She said: "If this were to be my last album, people would hear everything they needed to hear."

However, Carey has now told Billboard that those words were taken out of context:

"I will always make music. When I said it could be my last, that's because tomorrow's not promised to anyone."

Carey meanwhile added that she will surprise fans with the release of her next album, echoing Beyoncé's unannounced record drop last year.

The album - along with its title, tracklisting and artwork - is set to be revealed online in one go, with a physical edition following.

The singer said: "I have to be the one that announces this, especially the title. [The title takes its name from a] personal possession of mine that's part of an entity that I've had almost all my life."
