College offers Miley Cyrus sociology course

A US college is set to give students the chance to study Miley Cyrus.

Skidmore College in New York is offering a summer course called The Sociology of Miley Cyrus: Race, Class, Gender, and Media.

Visiting assistant professor of sociology Carolyn Chernoff is hosting the course and it is set to look at the singer and her relationship with public life.

A blurb for the course says: "From Disney tween to twerking machine, Miley Cyrus has grown up in the public eye, trying on and discarding very different identities onscreen and off.

"Ongoing media frenzy focused on Miley Cyrus' public image, music and body highlights the ways in which intersectional identities are shaped by pop culture and mass media."

One topic in the unit meanwhile examines "the rise of the Disney Princess, gender stratification and the hyper-commodification of childhood, and what happens to Disney stars as they age, bisexuality, queerness, and the female body".

Cyrus has reached new levels of fame over the past year or two as she shed her Hannah Montana image in favour of a more raunchy, mature ethos.
