Miley Cyrus has homeless runaway accept her award at VMAs

Miley Cyrus had a homeless man receive her MTV VMA last night (August 24).

The singer won the Video of the Year prize for her clip 'Wrecking Ball' but she surprised onlookers with her speech.

Instead of collecting the award herself, Cyrus brought out runaway Jesse, who accepted the award on behalf of young homeless people.

He said: "My name is Jesse and I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost and scared for their lives right now. I know this because I am one of these people.

"Los Angeles, entertainment capital, has the largest population of homeless youth in America. The music industry will make over $7 million this year and outside these doors are 54,000 human beings who have no place to call home."

Jesse then directed fans to Cyrus's Facebook page, which gives information on how to donate to Hollywood homeless shelter My Friend’s Place.
