School cancels dance due to rise of Miley Cyrus inspired twerking

A school has blamed Miley Cyrus and twerking for the cancellation of a dance they were due to hold.

Billboard reports that Mount Anthony Union High School in Vermont have pulled a homecoming dance because of students twerking too much.

Principal Sue Maguire said pupils have been crossing the taste boundaries with their dancing in recent years as a result of Cyrus, who has a penchant for the racy move.

She said: "Over the past couple of years, since Miley Cyrus took the stage ‘twerking’ at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, our students’ dancing behaviour has crossed the line of what we can condone as appropriate behaviour at a school.

"Twerking is dancing to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving a low squatting stance and thrusting movements. Students do not face one another or remain with the same person for the length of the song. If you haven’t seen twerking, I would encourage you to research this online."

Cyrus's twerking rose to mainstream attention in 2013 when she performed alongside Robin Thicke at the MTV VMAs.
