Miley Cyrus's 'teddy bear' artist: 'I don't get why her performance was so controversial'

Todd James, the designer who created Miley Cyrus's giant MTV VMAs teddy bears, has admitted that he doesn't understand why her performance at the ceremony has been so widely criticised.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, James explained that it went as planned and there were no problems so he isn't quite sure why it has been slammed by the press and public alike:

"I think there have been way crazier performances. There were no malfunctions of outfits or anything. I don't get it."

He also referred to her transition from squeaky clean Disney starlet to mature artist, adding: "It may take a second for some people to get on board. I think most people she's collaborated with, where I've heard interviews, were totally on board for her."
