Miley Cyrus 'wanted to make history' with her MTV VMAs performance

Pop singer and former Disney starlet Miley Cyrus has teamed up with MTV for a new documentary, in which she opened up about her provocative set at the 2013 MTV VMAs.

She explained that the controversial reaction was ideal because she intended to make waves and leave a lasting impression with her rendition of 'We Can't Stop' and subsequent collaboration with Robin Thicke on his smash hit single, 'Blurred Lines':

"Me and Robin [Thicke] the whole time said, 'You know we're about to make history right now'."

Cyrus also addressed the negative backlash following her appearance at the awards ceremony and added that she ignores any negativity that comes her way because it's draining to dwell on it:

"I don't pay attention to the negative because I've seen this play out so many times. How many times have we seen this play out in pop music? Madonna's done it. Britney's done it. Every VMAs performance, that's what you're looking for; you're wanting to make history."
