Morrissey denies authenticity of Twitter account

Morrissey has denied that he has recently taken to using Twitter.

Users of the social media site were taken by surprise earlier this week when tweets appeared on the verified account @itsmorrissey.

The first tweet appeared on May 14 reading, “Hello. Testing, 1, 2, 3. Planet Earth, are you there? One can only hope…” and has not been retweeted over 18,000 times.

A second message quickly followed saying: “Follow, follow, follow. Twitter is the perfect metaphor for… something. Dunno what.”

In the past 24 hours there have also been posts thanking fans for attending his live show in Albuquerque, a link to pre-order his forthcoming album and another link to a new website showing his current US tour dates.

After various news sources reported that the Manchester singer – who has never used social media before and has even stated in previous interviews that he does not own a telephone – was behind the Twitter handle, Morrissey has now denied any involvement with the @itsmorrissey account.

Via a statement posted on his favoured fan site True To You, the ‘Throwing My Arms Around Paris’ musician said:

“I would like to stress that I do not have either a Twitter or a Facebook account. I gather that a Twitter account has been opened in my name - as 'It's Morrissey' - but it is NOT Morrissey. I do not know who has opened this recent Twitter account, but please be aware that it is bogus. That's, of course, if you should remotely care.

Untwitterably yours,
MORRISSEY”

Morrissey’s latest single ‘World Peace Is None Of Your Business’ was released earlier this week and the album of the same name will follow in July.
