Today sees the launch of ‘Searching for the Perfect Beat: Future Bubblers’, a brand new expansion of the Gilles Peterson and Brownswood Music ethos and the unveiling of the official futurebubblers.com website.

Searching for the Perfect Beat: Future Bubblers is a three year talent discovery, mentoring and development programme created by Brownswood Music, determined on making in-roads into new areas, geographically and musically across England.

The project will roll out across the country, concentrating on different key regional cities and avoiding the common focus on London in each of the three years it is active.

In Year One, ‘Future Bubblers’ will be making bases in Nottingham and Salford. A third Future Bubblers city can be nominated by the public via the website.

Together with the support of local music ambassadors and existing networks within each city, Brownswood Music wants to find and work with exciting grassroots musicians, songwriters, producers, beat makers, rappers, choirs, scratchers; anyone that’s always “outside the box”.

“Future Bubblers is an extension and development of a concept that has always been at the core of Brownswood Music and Gilles Peterson’s values”, said Amy Frenchum at Brownswood Music. “The music policy at Brownswood Recordings is incredibly eclectic - it crosses genres, continents and eras of influence. Future Bubblers will be no different in unearthing specifically that which falls between the cracks, stylistically speaking.”

Via the Future Bubblers homepage, you can get all the vital information, including how to apply for the programme or participate as a partner, as well as watch an animation by Daniel Britt which offers a succinct overview of the programme and Brownswood’s plans for the next three years.

A barrier-free opportunity with a real life approach to the music industry

Future Bubblers is not a one-off in-and-out do-good scheme; it’s about mentoring for the long term across the country. It is a UK-wide movement of like-minds and vibes.

Future Bubblers is about finding the most exciting musical turning point at the grass roots and so prides itself on offering a simple and barrier free application process.

Once signed up, Brownswood will work with the successful applicants to raise their game, helping them to make sense of the music industry via a real life approach; offering support, uplifting mentorship, profile raising opportunities and a network of appreciation and collaboration.

“We really don’t want there to be any reason why someone wouldn’t apply for this opportunity”, said Gilles Peterson. “Just because you can’t deal with a 500 word application essay, haven’t got to grips with Soundcloud, or haven’t been given the chance to get in and lay your talent down, doesn’t mean you don’t have that raw musical gift.”

Future Bubblers is funded by Arts Council England and supported by Help Musicians UK. Helen Sprott, Director, Music and London, Arts Council England, said: “Talent development is an essential part of the Arts Council’s work and NPO Brownswood Music’s ‘Searching for the Perfect Beat’ is a great example of this in practice. It builds on Brownswood’s strong track record in talent development and will provide national support to emerging artists across a broad spectrum of genres. We look forward to seeing this project – and the wider ‘Future Bubblers’ programme – create more opportunities for artists and new experiences for a wide range of audiences.”

Help Musicians UK said “We are pleased to be an official partner for Searching for the Perfect Beat: Future Bubblers. Through our Talent Programme, we aim to help talented emerging artists take their careers to the next level, so we’re excited to be part of Brownswood’s mission to provide much needed support for some of the most innovative and creative musicians around the UK.”

From an online submission form to record shop drops, there are many routes to selection as a Future Bubbler.

The online application process to become a Future Bubbler is clear and simple and also incorporates the “Recommend a Future Bubbler” route, opening doors for local music scene ambassadors to make suggestions on behalf of those creatives that lack self-awareness of their talents, the confidence or resources to explore the opportunity.

Offline, would-be Future Bubblers can take advantage of an ‘Old School Demo Hand-In’ via selected music store partners in each city. There will even be “Local Digs” – a series of ‘open house’ performance dates.

Applications will open MONDAY 11TH MAY and remain open until the FRIDAY 7TH AUGUST deadline. A total of 10 final candidates will be selected from across the three cities.

Making the city the focus, Brownswood intend to work with local music ambassadors and partners

The project aims to help the local music audiences too; discovering the hidden musical treasures buried deep in their city and putting together positive music experiences that set vibrations for a scene that continues to support and value music from that city. It is a UK-wide “movement” of like-minds and vibes.

Brownswood’s intention is to collaborate with burgeoning scene supporters, encouraging music to thrive in the cities that first inspired it. If you are interested in becoming a Future Bubblers project partner or just want to let us know your big idea, get in touch.

Regular Local Events: The Next Future Bubblers Awareness Event

The next event is Future Bubblers Salford // Awareness Launch

THURSDAY 30TH APRIL, The Islington Mill, Salford, Manchester.

Next stop in this journey is Salford for the official media and local launch of the project in the city of Salford, at the creative haven, The Islington Mill.

The aim of the event is to introduce the initiative, explain the project’s intentions and provide an important audio reference via the specially curated live performances and DJ sets - for those who will be viewed as local ambassadors of the project; the people on the ground that will be able to directly inform, encourage and recommend Future Bubblers applicants.
