Nicki Minaj: 'Rap isn't gender based - don't refer to me as a female rapper'

'Starships' hitmaker Nicki Minaj has revealed that she doesn't like being referred to specifically as a female rapper because she can hold her own and doesn't need special treatment just for being a woman.

During an interview with MTV News, Minaj explained that being called a 'female rapper' is a little irritating because it shouldn't matter what gender you are where the genre is concerned:

"I do not see myself as a female rapper anymore, I'm sorry. I see myself as a rapper. I've worked with the greats and I've held my own with the greats and they respect me. So I should respect myself enough to see myself the same way they see themselves."

Earlier this week, the beauty told E! that she decided to return to her natural look because she was running out of ideas for new characters and ways to re-invent herself:

"It was [a] conscious [decision] at the beginning of my career. I felt like I would do this crazy stuff and then I would come back. Before my first album I used to have a natural look, only my underground followers really knew that side of me. And then I think mainstream only knew the wigs but I wasn't always looking like that when I started doing underground raps.”
