Olly Murs denies being an X Factor 'puppet'

Olly Murs has insisted that he has a big say over his music and career.

The singer found fame on the 2009 series of the X Factor, but he has often spoken about the unfair tag some TV talent show artists get.

Speaking in a new interview with Digital Spy, the Brit said that he isn't a "puppet" when it comes to deciding his affairs.

Murs said: "People think that we're just a machine or a cog of acts that get told what to sing and told what to do, and then once our lifeline's over we get chucked out. That's not the case really. It's never been the case for me. I feel like I've only ever really been a proper artist, when I came off The X Factor I went in the studio, I wrote my album, had a say in what I wanted to write, had a say in what I wanted my first single to be, I had a say in the production on all the songs, I had a say in what I did in the second album, and the third album, and now this album.

"I'm not a puppet and I think that's always been something that almost all the X Factor acts have to battle with when they come off the show. It's ignorance and a bit of snobbery, but it is what it is. You have to get over that and I think the only way you can get over that is by having success and good music. I think that whether people like my music or not, there's certain people that do like it and it's done really, really well and I've had success from it, so that sort of answers all the critics or anyone that sort of doubts you or puts you in that bracket."
