Hypothetical Interview @hyp0thetical

Tell us about yourself Hypothetical and your music?

It's like a blend of One Direction and Insand Clown Posse. Just kidding. WOOP WOOP.

We're two Philly boys that like to have a good time and record music, mainly alternative hip hop.  Give our debut EP, The Only One Laughing, a listen on Spotify/iTunes/Tidal.  We've been compared to Twenty One Pilots and Yelawolf.

How would you describe your sound?

Our sound consists of hip hop drums, memorable guitar riffs, fat bass lines and versatile vocals.  We don't really limit our sound.  If we want to make a record in a different genre, then we'll do it with the intention of creating the best song possible for our sound.  That's the essence of Hypothetical.

Talk about the experience making your single?

We wrote "Head Right" with just drums and piano at first first.  Then we sat on the beat for a month or so, knowing that we wanted to use it but couldn't quite put our finger on what kind of hook we wanted to go with.  Then Matt wrote the lyrics and they fit right away.  This song was meant to be more accessible to listeners with a message that everyone can relate to.  It definitely gets stuck in your head after a first listen. Better get your head right!

What are you currently working on? Any new projects? Shows?

We're releasing another 4-song EP in the coming months and just booked our EP Release show at The Barbary in Philadelphia so we're gearing up for that on Halloween weekend.  We'll be dropping a new single prior to that show with a music video to accompany it.  Then we'll get to work on our debut album.

What has been your biggest highlight in your music career this far?

Playing the Voltage Lounge in front of a packed crowd and having a lot of our fans come out to support.  Our live set brings a unique energy by combining rap with live instrumentation, so seeing reactions to the blend in genres is always exciting.

Name your ideal collaboration: mainstream or independent artist(s)?

In terms of a verse feature, Lil Dicky's alter-ego "Brain" would be fire.  Shout out to the Young Man.

If we were go to with a collaboration on the beat, we would love a riff from Gary Clark Jr. We have so much respect for him as an artist and believe he's in the top 5 best guitarists of all time.

Name something random that people do not know about you?

Matt, the lead singer/rapper of Hypothetical, received an MBA and started his own company by age 23. This is uncommon in the music scene, especially for rap, but is a major reason for the depth of musical interests and distinct differences in the path Hypothetical is taking to reach the charts.

What’s one thing you have learned or discovered while being in the indie music scene/industry?

Being independent in the music industry right now is more interesting now than ever before. It's really all about hard work, perfecting your craft, and networking. Even if your track is amazing, there is no guarantee the right people will hear it to bring it to that next level. Persistence is a MAJOR KEY.

What can we expect from you in the future?

In the near future, expect a new EP and east coast tour dates before the end of the year. In 2017, expect a crazy debut album.  We're trying to take the game and flip it on its side by pursuing a completely new sound that makes people react.
