T. L. Williams – Interview and The New Normal @tlwexperience

Tell us about yourself and your music? I'm a singer, songwriter, and producer from Chicago. My latest project The New Normal is in stores now. I'm a musician who plays 5 instruments (piano, trumpet, bass, guitar, & organ). I'm a EVP of a wonderful indie label. I'm a co-founder of a dance company and a NFP arts organization. I'm a husband, son, and brother. I'm a humble soldier blessed by the most high.

How would you describe your sound? The T. L. Williams sound is R&B and Hip-Hop wrapped in a futuristic funk experience. You can hear different influences inside the sound. Everyone from Coldplay, to Prince, to Drake, to Outkast to Sly Stone. I grew up in a musical household with a lot of different types of music going. I would walk in one room and hear Tony! Toni! Tone!, then I would walk into another room and hear Wu-Tang, and then I would walk into the kitchen and hear Blink 182. I just soaked it all up.

Talk about the experience making your single? The experience was really dope. My A&R Dani Jo and I was just riding round the city on the way to somewhere, and I started playing the track for Melanin and we just started puttin lines together. We are all about naturally receiving ideas. Stuff comes to us everyday when we are out and about living life. The concept came to us about a song celebrating the sexiness of women of color. We wanted to take a different angle though. We wanted to focus on the sex appeal only. Normally when you hear songs uplifting black women, they kinda come with a secondary tone..like "I love you EVEN THOUGH society says you're not sexy", or "you're beautiful TO ME". We're saying "You are sexy. Period. You don't have to compete with anyone!"..lol. We thought it would be dope to have The Boy Illinois and John The Author on the record. We felt like they would really understand the angle and they definitely did. They truly added to it's essence.

What are you currently working on? Any new projects? Shows? I'm currently doing a bunch of shows in the states at the moment. One of the performances was recorded for a live album and will be out in a few months. We are preparing to release 2 more singles from my album The New Normal. I've made a few appearances in a couple of hit TV shows that will air this spring. I'm producing some wonderful projects with dope new artists such as Sisters Of Element, & Shaina Jones. There will be a tour coming later this year. Also i'm in the studio working on the next project.

What has been your biggest highlight in your music career this far? Recently I became EVP of the legendary Chi-Sound Records (chisoundrecords.com). It's truly a blessing to be able to work and help bring other future musical icons to the forefront as well as the freedom for my own creativity. I also appreciate the responsibility of the legacy of the sound of Chicago; which is such a beautifully musical city.

Name your ideal collaboration: mainstream or independent artist(s)? I would definietly love to work with Coldplay, I'm a big fan of all their work. I think Rick Ross and I would create something timeless as well.

Name something random that people do not know about you? My favorite sport...GOLF. lol I was actually all-conference and conference MVP in high school.

What’s one thing you have learned or discovered while being in the indie music scene/industry? Believe it or not...a lot of people really don't know what they are doing...a LOT. There are even some pretty successful individuals who do not know the ins and outs of the business. This is why I believe you should never doubt yourself or your ideas in this industry. Believe in yourself at all times and never give up, because your ideas and your brand could change the game. Anything is possible.

What can we expect from you in the future? You can expect more music, more film, more art. I'm here to be a vessel. I'm here to be a blessing to others so we are gonna keep the music coming. I have an arts organization called Symphony Of Change (symphonyofchange.org), and we are doing our part to ensure music continues to move forward. I want to build and have a legacy of work that inspires generations to come.
