Interview with Chicago R&B star Brand ‘Nu @Brandnu4real

Tell us about yourself and your music? My music will defiantly tell you more about myself than I ever could. My music is my journal; it is my deepest thoughts and feelings sung out loud. A lot of those emotions unfortunately have stemmed from bad experiences with relationships/ friendships, but I have learned how to use pain and convert it power.  I want my music to serve multiple purposes, save relationships, heal the brokenhearted, and bring two lovers together intimately. You will be sure to find at least one song on my project that will apply to love… or the lack of it.

How would you describe your sound? My sound is deeply rooted in R&B but has a mixture of Hip-Hop and Gospel. I believe that there is power in music and each of those genres is impactful on music listeners. It is the 3-part harmonies like you may hear in a Gospel song, the energy of loud bass and 808’s in a Hip-Hop song, and the piano/strings in an R&B track that define my music. I believe music becomes a part of us, affects our mood and bodies. I’m all about the “feeling” music gives you, so I want my listeners to be filled with emotion, dance, or sing each time they listen to my projects. That is the power of my own unique sound.

Talk about the experience making your single? My single “Wanna Play?” was very fun to make. I actually did not plan on it being a single, but after recording the track, everyone seemed to enjoy it. It is a sexy & smooth R&B/Hip-Hop track that sets the mood for romance. I made this one for those who enjoy being intimate and need that right song to set the tempo for a great night. A lot of people ask me am I talking about someone particular in the song, and even though I pride myself on being honest… I’m not one to kiss and tell.

What are you currently working on? Any new projects? Shows? Currently I am preparing to release my debut EP “Helluva Nite”. I’ve worked on it for a while now; fine tuning it to a point where I was satisfied with the entire project. After the many positive reviews from my first single “Wanna Play?” I am ready to release my EP. No release date is set as of now, but defiantly be on the lookout for it very soon.

What has been your biggest highlight in your music career this far? The biggest highlight in my music career so far, has been completing 2 projects in one year. I know to some people that may not be a big deal, but to me that is everything. I have been blessed to be able to work with some solid and professional people who motivated me and pushed me to do great things. That drove me to create, and before I knew it, I had 2 amazing projects completed. I cannot wait to release them to the public.

Name your ideal collaboration: mainstream or independent artist(s)? I don’t have an ideal collaboration and I’ll explain why. I am someone who believes everyone’s gift is different, so no artist is better than the next. I don’t care who sells more records or has more followers; everyone has their own likes/dislikes. I don’t even have a favorite artist anymore because I have developed a taste for different genres of music. So anyone willing to work with me, whether it’s R&B, Hip-Hop, even Pop music, I would work with them as long as we can make something great.

Name something random that people do not know about you? Something random about me that people do not know about is that I’m a huge fan of the television show “Game of Thrones”. When I’m not writing or recording my songs, I’m online reading different theories about the show and the characters. If you have never seen the show, you should start watching it. It is so good and addictive. Oh, did I mention, “Winter is Coming” – Ned Stark (Game of Thrones)

What’s one thing you have learned or discovered while being in the indie music scene/industry? There has been so much I have learned on my musical journey, but one thing I have learned while being in the indie music scene is that you cannot trust everybody. I have had so many people claim they could do so much in helping advance my career, but when it was time to put in the work, they disappeared and never delivered. Those let downs held me back sometimes, but I picked my head up and moved on. My advice to all upcoming artist would be to be patient and make sure people can actually do what they claim. My experiences have taught me that everything that glitters is not gold.

What can we expect from you in the future? You can expect to see great things from me. My debut EP “Helluva Nite” being one of them that is coming soon. I’m very excited about its release. I think a lot of people will enjoy this project. I put my heart and soul into it to bring people great music. There is also another single dropping before the EP release, but I don’t want to give too much away just yet. You will definitely be hearing a lot of music from me in the near future.
