SYSUEV Interview and EP @SergeySysuev

Tell us about yourself and your music?

Greetings to all! I’m Ukraine based artist, singer, songwriter Sysuev. Music means everything to me. It is a way to express feelings that might be hard for me to express otherwise. After 2 years of my local musical career in CIS I’ve decided to compose new songs in English.

My first single was an emotional ballad ‘Fire In My Soul’ (see below).

Then I released an electronic dance single ‘What Are We Waiting For’ (see below).

At the given moment I’m releasing my brand new EP album ‘MmrZ’ here.

This EP is available to purchase on digital sites such as iTunes and stream on Spotify.

How would you describe your sound?

Once I’ve heard from DJ Grzly with whom I had previously performed in clubs: “Bro, when you make your songs you are fuzzing elements of electronica, Indie R&B music and future pop stirred into flawless, memorable compositions. It's some kind of magic.” Anyway, I’m still making my own sound!

Talk about the experience making your EP album?

It was probably the most exciting and interesting journey in my life. Vocal harmonies and lyrics crossed my mind pretty fast - right after hearing the beats and instruments, made by my guys. I immediately went to the studio and recorded my vocal parts. It's the first time when I recorded an album so fast. Any "throes of creation" did not prevail over me this time. I wish it could always be like this. I finally realized that it's much easier for me to write songs in English. Earlier I wrote songs in my native Ukrainian. I beleive in this way we are be able to expand musical geography and Ukrainian music will sound all over the world soon.

What are you currently working on? Any new projects? Shows?

I have already begun working on my new songs in the studio. I’m excited to continue working and creating new music. Several live shows on Christmas Eve are also scheduled.

What has been your biggest highlight in your music career this far?

For the first time it happened with me 2 years ago, when I won the top prize in the ‘Raskrutka’ (‘Artist building’) competition on Music Box UA TV Channel in Ukraine. At that moment I clearly understood that my music efforts were crowned with success and I should pursue my way of a performer.
Also in October I was honored to perform at the UEFA football match between Dynamo Kyiv and Young Boys at NSC Olympic Stadium in Kiev. Tens of thousands of football fans right in front of you. It was inexpressible emotions. I'll always remember the bright eyes watching my performance.

Name your ideal collaboration: mainstream or independent artist(s)?

I would be the happiest person if I had an opportunity to record a dope retro-futurist funk song with Childish Gambino and mysterious alternative R&B song with SOHN. They are the coolest artists of the new musical era.

Name something random that people do not know about you?

As you know, most singers constantly use in-ear monitors on stage. But I feel uncomfortable when I use them. I feel isolated from the audience and this hinders me to concentrate and interact with it. That is why I've been using a lot of big stage monitors for years. In this sense I'm kinda old-school guy
Secondly, folk Ukrainian dancing is something that I've always done in my early childhood. I was excelled in really difficult dancing stunts, like Jumping Jack and Arabian Butterfly.

What’s one thing you have learned or discovered while being in the indie music scene/industry?

I am sure that the DIY Music Era has now come. This is a proposition so clear that it needs no argument. DIY artists are releasing music on their own independent labels, managing their social campaigns, making their own videos, booking their own tours by themselves. Take a look at the Chance The Rapper, Snarky Puppy and KING. This is just plain insane. These indie artists became 2017 Grammy Nominees! 10 years ago no one could believe such a thing was possible. Consequently, I gamble on DIY artists instinct and their ability to make more miracles happen in future.

What can we expect from you in the future?

I’m working intensively on making good music for my listeners. My new indie R&B album is almost recorded. I’ll release it in March 2018. I’ve also got 2 music videos on hand for future releasing. In addition, we will organize a tour in support of my ‘MmrZ’ album in Europe. As for now, I perform locally in Ukraine. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. I own grand plans for future. I’m on the right way to succeed.
