Mik Newton (AKA Supercharge) Pressparty Interview Nov 2014

Q) Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

A) Really? Pleased to meet you too, who are you again? Sorry, just kidding...I'm  actually so glad you asked me that, I ask myself the same question every 5 years...who knows? Allow me to bore you with some overly optimistic bs about my future, no sorry, the reality is I don't know, either in the gutter or living in Acupulco I reckon.

Q) Who would you cite as your main influences?

A) Paul Weller, Rhys Ifans & some dude out of Beady Eye. No, just kidding, that's a little injoke for my mates who won't be reading this anyway! I would say DJ wise, the pioneers like Kool Herc, Larry Levan, David Mancuso, more recently DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, 2ManyDJs & UNKLE. Production-wise anything goes really I like to rob from all the greats!

Q) Where do you fit in with the current trend of dance music.

A) Haha, I don't! I'm just there, like a weirdo hanging on the perimeter.

Q) What style of music would you say you produce?

A) Out, as in anything, I get bored with being tired down to any particular genre so I try and release something different every time, I suppose I could tell you what I'm not...modern R'n'B would be a good start, I ain't Metal either! I suppose it just makes it easier to label me as Indie/Dance but I've released HipHop tracks & Drum'n'Bass choons innit?

Q) Where are you originally from? You've got an unusual accent.

A) Oh, jeez don't you start haha, theres a story behind that question but we'll leave that for the next interview I reckon! I'm originally from Newcastle, England, sort of, but I've lived in Hull, Kingston upon Hull for nearly 18 years and I spent a lot of time in Manchester in the 90s so I developed a bit of mix, it's a northern BBC-style accent don't you know.

Q) Who's the most famous person you've met on your travels?

A) My mam? No it must be me Dad haha, he designed the Underground Map for the Metro system in Newcastle, he was a graphic designer divn't yee nah! No on a serious it must be 'Brownie' of them crazy Stone Roses...unfortunately that night wasn't particularly crazy ha ha! It was more like tea & biscuits with Ian Brown & Mani, Barnie Sumner (Joy Division, New Order, Electronic) was DJing also. It was after the big Heaton Park gig at the after party in what's now the new Hacienda venue. I went with a few mates (Dirty Darnell & Skinbo) and my then girlfriend who I wont name! I'll be honest I was a little disappointed. Like my mate Robbo said the other day "Never meet your heroes" I think it's always a little underwhelming...still love em all though!

Q) Why is your mate called Dirty Darnell?

A) You don't want to know haha!

Q) And Skinbo?

A) You can ask him when you interview him, he's a DJ and so is Robbo actually! We're looking at doing some gigs together, just for a laugh really, don't think we'll be touring just yet haha, but we will be playing in Hull...watch this space!

Q) Quick fire questions?

A) okay

Q) Favourite colour?

A) Haha Blue! Always wear blue, in case no ones noticed!

Q) Favourite snack?

Q) Crisps, love em, could eat crisps all day long!

Q) Favourite flavour?

A) Salt'n'Vinegar, I like the really strong ones like Discos and Square Crisps, I like Pickled Onion Monster Munch, Extreme Pringles and hot Doritos but failing that any crisp will do! Me and a couple of friends or 'fiends' more like, got through 14 packets of Quavers the other night in about 10mins, ironically whilst listening to FYC and Transvision Vamp, love a bit of Wendy James, but that's another story!

Q) Oh well, that leads me on to the next question, who would make your ideal date?

A) Haha, well I'm single at the moment (again!) so I'd have out! No, that's not true haha, can I have people from the past when they were in their prime?

Q) I suppose so...so who would you choose?

A) When they were in their prime it would have to Gandhi! Only joking, I've always gone for blondes and i'm starting to think maybe that's my downfall! Blondes have more fun though don't they? Any who, back to the question, it would be a toss up (oo-er missus) between Brigite Bardot, Debbie Harry and dare I say it Wendy James, if you're out there Wendy...I also like that blue girl in the Xmen film, although it's probably wrong to fancy comic book characters, SCOOBY-DOO, WHERE ARE YOU?!
