Thom Yorke claims he was blackmailed by Tony Blair's administration

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has stated in an interview that he was blackmailed by Tony Blair’s advisors during the prime minister’s time in office.

Yorke revealed details of the 2003 incident during an interview with The Guardian.

At the time, Yorke was a spokesperson for The Big Ask – a climate change campaign in association with Friends of the Earth.

In his campaigner role, the ‘Creep’ musician sought support from politicians by seeking their acknowledgement of climate change.

However, he ran into particular problems with involvement from Tony Blair as he was told that unless he was photographed with the then prime minister, Friends of the Earth would be denied any future interaction with the politician.

Thom Yorke explained: “It got into this big fight ... [They said,] ‘If you don’t agree to meet the prime minister, Friends of the Earth will be denied all access to him.”

Yorke decided against the request due to Blair’s involvement in the Iraq war: “Because of the Iraq war, I didn’t want to do it. I felt it was morally unacceptable for me to be photographed with Blair.”

Speaking more generally about climate change, the Oxford star stated: “Initially, it kept me awake at night – which sounds really stupid. I got unhealthily obsessed with it. But when I started to get involved in doing something about it., that helped me a lot. But I always have the impression that I am not doing enough at all.”
