Without a doubt one of the most distinctive songwriters and storytellers of the last 3 decades, Australia’s Paul Kelly makes a return with his first studio release in 6 years, presenting album ‘Spring and Fall’. Since his debut album released back in 1981, we have witnessed Paul’s music progress across an impressive 26 albums.

Paul is a searingly truthful songwriter, notable as much for his lyricism – which can be caustic and emotional or wryly humorous – as for his deft musicianship which draws from folk, rock, bluegrass, electronica and dub reggae. In the years since 2007’s ‘Stolen Apples’, Paul has written and released a book titled ‘How To Make Gravy’, an experience that he says has helped develop structure for his upcoming music. “I knew I didn’t just want to put out a collection of songs loosely related to each other” he explains, “Noticing that people are listening to music more and more now in a grazing kind of way – picking a song here and a song there – spurred me on to try and make a record that would take a stand on behalf of The Album.”

Producer of ‘Spring and Fall’, J. Walker, describes the experience as “a simple joy”, even after power cuts and all kinds of problems during wild winter storms in Gippsland (East Australia), where ‘Spring and Fall’ was recorded. “I surveyed the flood damage to my studio and I wondered to myself whether this was a good omen or if we were going to be in for a torrid time.” In answer to Walker’s question, it is clear that it was, of course, a good omen and the album proves Paul is at the height of his career. Walker continues “I think the kernel of these recordings came that night when the wind and rain were howling, the lights cut out and we couldn’t stop ourselves from playing out a song in total darkness, slaves to the music.” Paul concludes that “The album ended up in lusher places than I’d imagined but that’s okay. Spring can be like that!”

‘Spring and Fall’ is a great record, the sound blending acoustic guitars, the occasional electric guitar and double bass, as well as the odd violin and cello. The lyrics are delicate and the songs create a natural flow with each other to tell a story of falling in and out of love. Every emotion of a relationship is laid out throughout the 11 tracks, leaving the listener with a yearning to hear the next part of the story. It is yet another perfect example of Paul’s great storytelling.

Paul has won 8 ARIAS and been inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1997. Two of his songs are in the APRA’s Top 30 Australian Songs Of All Time – his biggest selling single ‘To Her Door’ and ‘Treaty’, which he co-wrote and performed with Indigenous band Yothu Yindi. In 2011 he released ‘The A-Z Recordings’, an exhaustive 8-disc set that provided a key insight into how this most fertile of musical minds works.  Following his performance of the 100 songs alphabetically over a 4-night ‘residency’ Jane Cornwell of The Evening Standard rightly claimed Paul to be “a songsmith able to condense epics into perfect four-minute pop songs”.

In 2012, Paul toured the UK on two separate occasions playing various venues all across the country, and he now returns this year for a special one-off and unmissable show at Chelsea’s Cadogan Hall, on Friday 12th April 2013.
