Ricky Martin: 'I would bully people who I knew were gay'

'Livin' La Vida Loca' hitmaker Ricky Martin has confessed that he used to 'bully' other gay men because he struggled with coming to terms with his own sexuality.

During a personal interview with GQ Australia, Martin explained that he found it difficult to come out because he was raised in a strict Roman Catholic family in Puerto Rico so grew up thinking being homosexual was 'wrong':

"I was very angry, very rebellious. I used to look at gay men and think, 'I’m not like that, I don’t want to be like that, that’s not me. I was ashamed.'"

"When you’re told you’re wrong by everyone, from society, from your faith – my self-esteem was crushed,’ he said. ‘I took my anger out on those around me. I look back now and realize I would bully people who I knew were gay. To realize that was confronting to me. I wanted to get away from that."
