Robbie Williams to electrify the BBC electric proms

Robbie Williams is set to open this year's BBC Electric Proms, appearing alongside Doves, Dizzee Rascal and Smokey Robinson. Shirley Bassey will also perform with the BBC concert orchestra, playing songs written for her by Gary Barlow and Rufus Wainwright.

"I cannot think of a better opening artist for this year's event than Robbie Williams," festival director Lorna Clarke said in a statement. This being the proms, Williams is not on his own.

The former Take That star will bring along string and horn sections, a full band and Trevor Horn as musical director. Horn produced Williams's upcoming comeback album, 'Reality Killed the Video Star', whose title is a reference to the Bugles' hit 'Video Killed the Radio Star', which Horn co-wrote.
