CHANEL & THE CIRCUS FIRST MEDIA INTERVIEW

Interview With Chanel Ahead of Her Debut Single Release

Firstly introduce us, who is Chanel and who are the Circus? I am Chanel, the songstress, imagineer, and of course ring leader! While the circus is a mix of musicians and cabaret performers, it also serves as a metaphor for life and the stories it gives me, which I in turn relate to you.

We’re imagining mad circus tricks in a tent partnered with your music, is that what we can expect? Hehe! I'm sure that will happen, however now it's in music venues and festivals. The great thing about my traveling circus is that it's different every time depending on which burlesque, fire, and acrobats are available and which city I'm in!

Where did the mad idea of a circus act come from? La di da well I've never fit in so running away with the circus and being part of the 'freak show' attracted me, to say the least. I love the idea of putting on a full show, a slew of entertainment 'right before your very eyes'. The fact that it's not a written show means I am able to connect to every audience uniquely.

Wow, a really fresh vibe with ‘High Standards’ – how would you describe your sound? Hey thanks! Yeah it's dance rock or punk pop I'd say, very upbeat to counter the dramatic message.

What is ‘High Standards’ all about? It's the beginning of my story, a journey to self realization and love. We don't always talk about when we're down or then parts of ourselves we get angry at, so naturally I put it in a song. I'm not going to hide the fact I have high standards about things like relationships and myself, instead I'm going to put it all out there in the open, take a good long stare, and find a better way to move forward. I learned the easier I am on myself the easier it is to be compassionate towards people.

We see that you were involved with International Women’s Day – are you a big campaigner for women’s rights? I'm a big campaigner for women's rights for men's rights for trans rights for asexual rights for everyone to be who they want and dress how they like, which is the message of my song 'If It Turns You On' usually performed with a burlesque or boylesque dancer in dominatrix gear.

You’re from LA, why did you choose to launch yourself in the UK? I 'jumped the pond' to go to uni at LIPA in Liverpool, fell in love with the people here, made The Secret Circus, which is me and Eve Howlett's cabaret baby, doing music all the time and now feel I'm in my stride.

We can’t resist a question about that awesome make-up and the nose ring – it’s a really unique image, did you create it yourself? Yeah! I got the nose ring with my first girlfriend in Camden, which is fitting. Completely spontaneous, like my two tattoos and most of my hair color choices, but I'm always happy with it. It's the stuff that takes a while to deliberate that I change my mind on...

Is it possible that we’ll never see the same Chanel twice – will it always be a different hair colour or diamond studded cheek? Well of course darling! It wouldn't be honest if I kept the same look. I'm constantly learning and changing so does my expression. However I can never get enough glitter. Such a magpie.

What’s next for Chanel and the Circus? High Standards music video!! I filmed it in Liverpool with my friends and Laurence Harvey. It's a comic and gore feature, resembling Rocky Horror Picture Show, my fav. I absolutely adore extreme contrast, so eating my dates in full glitter is a visual dream come true. I'll be having a party for the release April 21 in London at a secret venue ;) just follow me for the info

Any final messages? Love yourself be yourself trust in change
