UK SINGER SONGWRITER MRJ LAUNCHES DEBUT SINGLE

With celeb fans including Perez Hilton, fresh UK singer/songwriter bases his debut single on his own biographical tale of a gay man trying to fit into a heterosexual world

"Delivered with quietly-understated emotion, over a beautifully-chilled sound-bed, this is an honest, soul-bearing song with lyrics that many will connect with, and possibly be inspired by” - Record of the Day

MRJ aka. Matthew Russell Jones is a fresh cut, home-grown singer songwriter, delivering a uniquely addictive pop sound that’s carving a sharp edge into the British scene.  His debut single, ‘Bliss’ released on 14 April, is testament to MRJ’s divided love between acoustic and electronic and with celeb fans including the likes of Perez Hilton, MRJ is most definitely a ‘one to watch’ artist for 2017.

‘Bliss’ is a divine slice of serene pop, one of those chilled songs, which beautifully skips and loops the distinctive vocals of MRJ around a solid sound-bed of beats.  Opening up his own life as a living songbook, MRJ wrote ‘Bliss’ as a positive awakening from a bitter heartbreak…..

It was the end of 2015 and he’d had spent a year pouring out his heart-wrenching emotions through his lyrics and songwriting – time to turn a corner and look at the bright side; that’s when ‘Bliss’ was conceived.  It’s a track depicting the ‘letting go’ of a deeply entrenched relationship, a biographical track that comes from the heart; a reassuringly chilled vibe that most of us can relate to.  The video to ‘Bliss’ was directed by Jay Parpworth and was filmed in double time in Kent during the dead cold of November.  It’s a ‘one-shot’ style with no edits at all, adding to the atmospheric effect of the movie.  The video tells the story of a gay man, experimenting and juggling with hetrosexual love and finally realising where his true happiness lies.  It’s the story of MRJ.

Born in Lincoln MRJ grew up on a staple musical diet of the classics, from The Beatles, Carol King, Sting, The Police and Chris Rea, right through to classic Motown,  and in later years Bijork and Portishead were filtered down from his elder sister.  MRJ literally couldn’t keep still as a child, by the time he was 3 years old, he was taking dance lessons, simply as a way of channeling his energy along to a music background.  When he hit secondary school the dancing stopped and MRJ discovered his voice and acting, singing in the church choir until his voice broke, which almost disabled his singing for a while.  He left school at 16, to do a Btec in acting, sights set on a career on the stage.

But the passion for music couldn’t be suppressed and MRJ landed himself a role in Chorus Line – instantly the music was back in his life.  By 18, MRJ moved to the bright lights of London to study at Arts Ed in Chiswick, hiring an agent along the way.  A 6-month job to sing in Majorca was the turning point for MRJ, as he realised that his voice was his strongest asset. It didn’t take long before the big call came….MRJ got the call to confirm that he’d landed a role in High School Musical in the West End.  High profile stage productions in the West End and global tours became the carousel of MRJ’s life.

During this time, MRJ formed a duet band called, Winsor Jones, which won Perez Hilton’s talent competition called ‘Can You Sing’ twice over - unprecedented at the time.  As MRJ matured, he fell in love, had his heart broken and began channeling his feeling into lyrics – the songwriter was born.  MRJ threw himself into strategic collaborations with many different producers and songwriters from London to LA to procure his sound.  This includes Michael Stockwell (Jools Holland, Miss Montreal), Sky Adams (Rizzle Kicks, Zak Abel) of Phrased Differently’ London (Little Mix, Craig David, Miley Cyrus).

Now MRJ is ready to deliver his outstanding flavour of pop to the world in the form of his debut single ‘Bliss’.  Whack on the headphones and turn this one up high – enjoy!

The debut single ‘Bliss’ is released through Ditto Music on 14 April 2017
