Shakira's 'Loca' judged to have broken copyright laws

A judge has ruled that a Shakira song was "indirectly copied" from another musician.

The singer released the Spanish track 'Loca' in 2010 and New York judge Alvin Hellerstein has ruled that it broke copyright rules.

It is said that the song, which is based on an earlier version by its collaborator El Cata (real name Eduard Edwin Bello Pou), ultimately copied another artist's work.

The judge said that Bello's song was copied from Dominican singer Ramon Arias Vazquez's 1990 song 'Loca con su Tiguere'.

Hellerstein said: "There is no dispute that Shakira's version of the song was based on Bello's version. Accordingly, I find that, since Bello had copied Arias, whoever wrote Shakira's version of the song also indirectly copied Arias."

Bello has denied copying the Arias song.

The English version of Shakira's 'Loca' - which featured Dizzee Rascal - was not a major part of the case.
