Shawn Mendes: 'It's a little selfish but sometimes, you know, love is selfish'

Singer Shawn Mendes has revealed that his new single 'Treat You Better' was fairly straightforward to write.

Speaking about the song's lyrics to Elvis Duran, the Canadian sensation explained that it was easy to write because he's comfortable in female company and has close girl friends who confide in him about their romantic problems:

"It's more like this guy's mean, but I could treat you better! The way I viewed it when I was writing it was, like, being in a really close relationship... I have, like, a million girl cousins and one guy cousin so I'm very comfortable around girls."

"I have some really close girl friends who will tell me about their guy problems so I flipped it a little bit and was like, if there was a thing between me and this girl - and I knew there was a thing - and I knew the guy treated her badly, I'd be like, 'stop coming to me about the problems, why don't you break up with him and be with me then you won't have problems.'"

He then added firmly: "It's a little bit selfish in a way, but sometimes, you know, love is selfish."
