Shawn Mendes talks perfectionism: 'I'm tortured because I care'

Singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes has revealed that one of his biggest insecurities is feeling as though he could improve.

During a revealing new interview with Billboard magazine, the talented young Canadian opened up about his perfectionist nature and confessed that he is always striving to do more or to do better:

"The greatest [artists] are tortured souls. I'm not calling myself great. I'm tortured because I care. I'm always upset about not doing things as good as I think I could have because I care."

He went onto explain that he only feels as if he began honing his vocal ability last year, adding: "Singing kind of came out of nowhere. And it was shitty. I would say I didn't start getting very good till last year. There's a lot more to success than just singing. I felt like, 'Let's do the rest and figure out the singing thing later.'"

Back at the beginning of August, Mendes told The Huffington Post that he can't wait to release his highly anticipated new album "Illuminate" because he thinks it's the most honest representation of the artist he is working towards becoming:

“I think, for me, it’s been the best point of my career yet. I feel like I’ve had a moment to settle into the type of artist I want to be. The album came together beautifully. I think I’ve never been as proud of a piece of art in my life... I think the fans will walk away feeling really happy about it.”

"llluminate" is scheduled to be released on September 23 and you can read more about it here
