Hip-hop icon joins Dizzee Rascal, Happy Mondays, Levellers, Formation, The Orb & others across September weekender.

Today, we’re excited to announce that KRS-One will support Dizzee Rascal on the iconic Hastings Pier on September 16th. KRS-One will open the weekender that also sees a sold out show by Happy Mondays on September 17th and & a special anniversary show by Levellers on September 18th, which is selling fast.

New York-born Lawrence Parker, better known by his stage name of KRS-One, is one of the most respected names in hip-hop. He started his journey on the rap scene in 1986 as Boogie Down Productions with the late DJ Scott La Rock. Over the past 30 years, KRS-One has published over 20 albums and performed with numerous other artists including Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, Das EFX and R.E.M. Named the “conscience of hip-hop” by the Rolling Stone, KRS-One now splits his time teaching his immense knowledge to others and continuing to perform his classic hits such as ‘Sound of da Police’KRS-One will be coming to Hastings Pier for a special performance on September 16th.

Music has always been, and continues to be, an essential part of Hastings' culture and this new addition to the weekend's line up makes sure that the September weekender has something to appeal to all generations. Following Dizzee Rascal & KRS-One’s performance on Friday night, The Happy Mondaysare set to perform ‘Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches’ in it’s entirety for it’s 25th anniversary on Saturday September 17th, plus a selection of greatest hits. Support on the night will come from The Orb performing ‘Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld’ in full, also for it’s 25th anniversary; and Formation, one of the most exciting new indie electronica acts of the moment. This date is now sold out.

Sunday 18th September will see Levellers perform ‘Levelling the Land’ for it’s 25th anniversary, plus a selection of greatest hits; with support from Turin Brakers who recently released their seventh album ‘Lost Property’; and the Nottingham folk-punk outfit Ferocious Dog. A limited number of tickets are left for this date.

The history of Hastings Pier is one of love and tragedy, originally opened in 1872 it’s had many lives, including an iconic period in the 1960s where the pier quickly became of the most important venues on the touring circuit, playing host to The Clash, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Nico, Siouxsie and the Banshees as well as the location of Syd Barrett’s last ever show with Pink Floyd.

Damaged by the infamous storms in 1990 and closed to the public between 1999 and 2002, while it did re-open briefly it was finally closed in 2008. Efforts continued to raise funds to save the pier but in October 2010 it was dealt a devastating blow when a fire destroyed 95% of it’s superstructure. Unlike the iconic Brighton West pier, however, structural surveys concluded that the cast iron Victorian-era sub-structure was salvageable. Now six years later the final works of the £14.2m refurbishments of Hastings Pier are complete and the pier has recently re-opened.
