GoGo Cult talks about Music, Forthcoming GIgs and Playing at this year's Scrumpstock

Conversations with the music acts performing at Scrumpstock (Exmouth Rugby Club, 15-17 May, 2015).

Please introduce yourselves

We are The Go Go Cult crawling from our heavily armed farmhouse in the Outskirts of Reading. Raised on oxycetalene and chicken bones we aim to infect the world by preaching our unique blend of hypnotic fifties psycho-delic garage punkabilly gospel warping the minds of the strong and weak alike with the power of our Cult-O-Phonic Hypnoray.

What was your most memorable experience of playing live?

A packed tent @ Bearded Theory Festival on the same lineup as the Damned & Adam Ant. Also playing the trash bar on Planet Goo where the inhabitants all have 8 hands – that was some loud applause : )

Who are you listening to at the moment?

The Cramps, The Gun Club, Suicide, The Birthday Party, Link Wray, Johnny Burnett, The Sonics, Dick Dale, Siouxsie & The Banshees etc

Who has been your most exciting person to work with?

Live – The Fuzztones (USA) – Loved this band since I was a teenager. Professionally – Alan Wilson owner of the Legendary Western Star Records – fantastic guy & fantastic label

How was that for you?

Signing to Western Star Records was a dream come true

Have you had any weird and/or memorable moments you could tell us about?

There have been many ! We once played a burlesque club called Grind-A-Go-Go which had a revolving drum riser. During the set it was turned on and stuck with the drummer with his back to the crowd. We also played a venue where the vocal PA blew up half way through the set and we had to play instrumentals for the rest of the show : )

What has GoGo Cult achieved so far?

We have signed to the legendary Western Star Records in Bristol and released two albums on that label (“Into The Valley Of The Go Go Cult” & “This Is The Voice Of The Go Go Cult”) with a 3rd album due out at the end of this year.

One of our tracks (My Baby Drives A UFO) appeared on the free covermount CD of Vive Le Rock Magazine (issue 10)

Both our albums have received rave reviews in main stream magazines such as Vive Le Rock, Big Cheese, Uk Rock n Roll Magazine, Street Sounds, Vintage Rock, Scootering and more

We have two pages of a book dedicated to us (25 years of Western Star)

And recent news: Trash Wax a fantastic independent European label has just licenced some tracks from Western Star and will be pressing the first album on vinyl and releasing it soon !

And together with some great live reviews from E Festivals, Louder than Bombs, Rwa Ramp, BBC Introducing and Isolation Magazine we have played with some fantastic bands including: Adam Ant, The Damned, 999, Chelsea, The Selecter, The Fuzztones, Creepshow, The Meteors, Glen Matlock, The Rezurex, The Peacocks, Demented Are Go & The Long Tall Texans.

What do you write about?

Our songs are about injustice, love, death, swamps, monsters, voodoo, aliens and vampires !

Who would you most like to meet?

Joe Meek – Legendary Producer who had the first British no. 1 hit in the USA. His recortding studio was above a bag shop in london – Maverick. He shot himself !

What about your albums?

They are both about taking a hypnotic voyage with The Go Go Cult wherever we fancy taking you earthlings.

Is there a story behind any of your songs:

In Tupelo – A Country Death Song about an unfortunate man  driven to desperate actions due to cruel moments in his life resulting in the killing of a man, a dog led man hunt through cotton fields, his resulting capture and subsequent execution : )

What are you up to next?
