Taylor Swift on new album: 'It's got emotional complexity, but it's not about devastation'

Taylor Swift has offered more details about themes running through her new album.

The US star is due to release '1989' on October 28 as she follows up 2012's 'Red'.

Speaking in an interview on the Graham Norton Show, Swift said that the record's lyrics reflect a time in her life where she was enjoying singledom, not lamenting it.

The singer said: "[The album has] emotional complexity, but it's not about devastation or pining away or rocking back and forth sobbing.

"It's much more about the last two years of my life, which have been about moving to New York, surrounding myself with friends, figuring out who I am, independence, freedom, all those things."

Speaking meanwhile about her shift from country-pop to plain pop and whether some older fans might be turned off, Swift added:

"I'd played around with pop sensibilities for years and this is first time I've truly admitted this is the direction I want to go for. The only time fans are disappointed is when music is bad."

The Graham Norton Show will be broadcast tonight (October 10) in the UK on BBC One.
