Taylor Swift: 'My fans experience people making up lies about them in the same way I do'

Hitmaker Taylor Swift stopped by American chat show 'The View' this morning and explained that knowing her fans are struggling with bullying and being gossiped about drove her to write a song about coping with being on the receiving end of that.

When asked by the co-hosts about writing 'Shake It Off' and the message the song contains, the beauty admitted that seeing her fans going through the same kinds of things she was dealing with inspired her to pen a track about it:

"It was the fact that lately I’ve been spending a lot of time online… I’ve been going and reading all kinds of comments from fans on Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr [...] I discovered that not only was I going through having people saying things about me that weren’t true, but so were they."

Swift went onto add that she faces a much more public bashing because lies about her appear on newsstands and in magazines, but she still feels impacted by the negativity and so do her followers who go through the same experiences:

"It’s a different situation, but It’s the same feeling and we need to have the same reaction if you want to live a happy life. You know, it’s human instinct to try and defend yourself when you’re being misrepresented, but you have to just let go of that."
