Taylor Swift label denies Spotify $6m royalties claim

Taylor Swift's record label has refuted claims from Spotify that the singer would earn about $6m (£3.8m) a year from the service.

The US star recently pulled her back catalogue from the streaming platform, citing that it was "unfair" to musicians and writers.

Spotify boss Daniel Ek recently said that artists of Swift's ilk could earn about $6m a year from its royalties.

However, Scott Borchetta - CEO of Swift's label Big Machine - told Time that she only earned $496,044 (£317,000) from Spotify in the last year.

He added that the team have made more from Vevo in the last 12 months than they have from Spotify.

A Spotify rep has responded to say that Swift actually earned around $2m (£1.2m) over that period.

They added: "Our users, both free and paid, have grown by more than 50 percent in the last year, which means that the run rate for artists of every level of popularity keeps climbing. And Taylor just put out a great record, so her popularity has grown too.

"We paid Taylor’s label and publisher roughly half a million dollars in the month before she took her catalogue down - without even having [new album] '1989' on our service - and that was only going to go up."
