Taylor Swift: 'I wasn’t friends with Kanye West until he had respect for me'

Taylor Swift has opened up on how she eventually became friends with Kanye West.

The duo's relationship soured when the rapper infamously hijacked a MTV VMAs acceptance speech in 2009 to proclaim that Beyoncé should have won.

However, the pair seem to have made amends recently.

Speaking in the September issue of Vanity Fair, '1989' star Swift said that Jay Z was the link that brought them together.

She said: "I feel like I wasn’t ready to be friends with [West] until I felt like he had some sort of respect for me, and he wasn’t ready to be friends with me until he had some sort of respect for me - so it was the same issue, and we both reached the same place at the same time.

"I became friends with Jay Z, and I think it was important, for Jay Z, for Kanye and I to get along...And then Kanye and I both reached a place where he would say really nice things about my music and what I’ve accomplished, and I could ask him how his kid’s doing."

The VMAs incident saw Swift win the Best Female Video gong before West stormed the stage to say:

"Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, Imma let you finish but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time…one of the best videos of all time!"
