Taylor Swift and Adele clean up at the 2011 American Music Awards

Country-pop's sweetheart Taylor Swift was the big winner at last night's (November 20) American Music Awards.

The 'You Belong With Me' superstar took home the coveted Artist of the Year prize, along with Favourite Album for 'Speak Now' and Favourite Female Artist, and told the audience how proud she was to have won such impressive titles:

"I wrote this album ('Speak Now') while I was on the Fearless tour and so I ended up writing lots of these songs at four in the morning in hotel rooms... And the fact that you would honour it in this way, you just have no idea what this means to me... I want to thank all the fans for remembering the lyrics and for caring about lyrics, I'm just so thankful and I'm so happy."

British songstress Adele also won 3 titles - namely Best Pop/Rock Album for '21', Favourite Adult Contemporary Artist and Favourite Pop/Rock Artist - although she wasn't present at the ceremony as she is recovering from throat surgery.

Beyoncé took home the trophy for Favourite Soul/Rhythm & Blues Female Artist, Maroon 5 won the Favourite Band, Duo or Group prize in the Pop/Rock category and rapper Nicki Minaj was handed 2 awards for Favourite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Favourite Rap/Hip-Hop Album for her debut, 'Pink Friday'.
