Time for a laugh at Beverley Festival

It’s not that Beverley Festival shouldn’t be taken seriously, but there again we should all learn to let our hair down at some stage – so this year the festival has made sure it has only the best for its Comedy Nights in June.

Kicking off on the Friday (21at June) night is the brilliant and loveable stand up comedian that likes to hug and eat cake, Patrick Monahan. “There isn’t a comic quite like him and his hugs alone are worth the price of admission”. ***** New Current, 2012.

Having been brought up in Middlesbrough by his Iranian Mother and Irish Dad he has many hilarious and engaging stories about his heritage. “He has the dark looks and stubble of the Middle East, married to the charm of the Irish and the sense of fun of the Teessider… Omid Djalili meets Dave Allen you might say.” Daily Mail

Since he started performing stand-up he has had a meteoric rise up the comedy ladder and has gone from ‘open spot’ to headliner in an incredibly short length of time. Now a regular MC and headlining act at the top London and UK comedy clubs including the prestigious Jongleurs circuit and the Comedy Store, he is certainly going to receive a big welcome at the festival. With the festival attracting a wide range of audiences from music and comedy lovers alike to families, Monahan is the perfect act to start the festival’s comedy nights. “Monahan possesses the rate ability to be hilarious without being outrageous”. ***** 3 Weeks, 2012.

Following on the Saturday, and back by popular demand, is that wackiest of characters, John Shuttleworth.  Quoted as being "A National Institution...the 42nd Best Reason to Love Britain"  Sunday Telegraph Shuttleworth will be bring in his own special brand of comedy to the festival. The Sony and Perrier nominated Shuttleworth will be venturing beyond his garden gate to tread the mean streets of Beverley and wander up to take a stroll around Beverley’s Racecourse. Which is better: city life or country living? Supermarket or village shop? Or is it better to sit in your shed and count the cobwebs? Those are some of the questions the star of Radio 4's ‘The Shuttleworths’, and TV’s ‘500 Bus Stops’ will be asking the audience on Saturday 22 June.  “His stand up is second to none, his timing is impeccable, and you can practically warm your hands on his good nature “ The Guardian Guide. "Wonderful, wacky, and weird" Radio Times.

Not only will Mr Shuttleworth be appearing live at the festival, but he will also be appearing twice in his film “Southern Softees” on the Saturday of his performance.

To round off a weekend of humour, the festival is proud to include in its programme a cabaret version of its Patron, John Godber’s award winning film play “Bouncers” in which we welcome you to a vision of British Urban Nightlife’. Lucky Eric and the rest of the Bouncers will arrive at the festival on Sunday 23rd  for audiences to spend a night with Baz and the lads, Plain Elaine and, if they are Lucky, Sexy Suzy, along with a host of other characters.  Follow them on their Friday night out , from the hairdressers to the drunken taxi ride home, all under the watchful eyes of the four men in black. Performed by a top-notch cast  “Bouncers” should not to be missed!

Monday 20th May - Legendary rock band Soundgarden today announced they will release a brand new repackaged edition of ‘King Animal’, their critically acclaimed album released in November last year. Today, Beady Eye announce the release of ‘Second Bite of The Apple’, the first single from their new album ‘BE’. The track will be made available for download from April 30th through Columbia Records.

‘Second Bite of The Apple’s’ off-kilter, spacey swagger exemplifies the evolution in the band’s sound and Dave Sitek’s influence on production. Building to an exhilarating, brass infused climax, the track is a bold statement of intent, announcing the band’s return in storming fashion.

The band’s series of three intimate shows in June to celebrate the release of ‘BE’ sold out in a matter of minutes after being announced. They will kick off proceedings at the Manchester Ritz on June 19th before heading to London to perform at the Camden Centre on June 20th. They will finish the run in Glasgow at the ABC on June 22nd.

Nokia and La Blogotheque are proud to announce that soul songstress Lianne La Havas will headline the third leg of the Lumia Live Sessions. The Mercury Award nominated star will perform to an intimate crowd of approx 200 guests at Rampworx, an indoor skate bowl in Liverpool on the 30th May 2013.

The past twelve months have been monumental for the London based singer. Her debut album, ‘Is Your Love Big Enough’, was voted i-Tunes album of the year and she was also nominated for BBC Sound of 2012 and the 2012 Mercury Prize.

With panoramic views of the countryside and Hall and its gardens, with good toilets, free hot showers provided at no extra charge, clearly marked drinking water points, café and shops (in the Hall’s courtyard), we do advise buying vouchers in advance to ensure a pitch.

With everybody from The Mail Online, Daily Telegraph and even Anita Baker herself heaping praises on British Nigerian R&B singer and songwriter ADENIKÈ for her rather excellent cover rendition of the 1986 classic, “Sweet Love” on the recent series of BBC’s The Voice UK, the London native debuts a beautiful original song of her own titled “I Stayed” - which is currently receiving support from the likes of MTV UK, SoulCulture, Digital Spy, Huffington Post, SBTV and several online tastemakers - for our listening pleasure.

To be released on June 10, “I Stayed” is a strong and emotive piano-led ballad, accompanied by rousing string arrangements and commanding drum patterns, which sees Adenikè in the form of her life with a pitch perfect vocal performance and songwriting dexterities that are well beyond her years, as she passionately pours out her heart about lost love and heartbreak on this Okiem Warmann-produced record, “I Stayed”. Director and head of music, Dale Olivier recently said “ It’s amazing to see the shift in the music Industry since the digital age of music began in the 90’s which is when we first started out and based our model on the basic principle of Independent music; sharing costs and revenue with the artists. We came against some fierce criticism from some artists, the musician’s Union, music press and other labels for charging artists for services. This has now however become the main model of the new music Industry. This did not deter our vision and we carried on regardless which eventually lead to us working with the biggest names and companies in the music business. We always adopted and embraced the “digital” changes and used technology and the Internet to build not only our brand, but help artists that were completely unknown achieve official chart positions and achieve coverage on Major platforms. As an artist myself I understood the plight and vision of musicians and how hard it can really be. I then incorporated this into our company’s strategy; sticking to the much needed time and effort to build an artist’s career as opposed to the instant fame solutions and services that inhabit the Internet these days and encouraged by TV shows like X-Factor. We always aim to work with the best and most serious artists/clients and have found that artists who are doing it just for the instant fame and who are troublesome about it - never make it. So I am ecstatic that after all these years we have become known as the “original artist and label services company”. 

Matchbox Recordings also broadcast a PRS for Music licensed Internet Radio station known as “Matchbox Radio 24 “ playing brand new music alongside hits 24 hours a day. R5’s recent Hollywood Records EP, aptly titled ‘Loud’ will be followed by the band’s debut studio album later this year. Check out the official music video for title track from the EP ‘Loud’ below. 

If Riker and Ross look familiar, it’s because the former is a regular on "Glee" (as a member of the a cappella group, the Warblers) while Ross stars in the Disney Channel Original smash hit series, "Austin & Ally." Each band member is a virtuoso musician and all write, especially lead guitarist Rocky and bassist Riker, who serve as R5’s in-house songwriters. 

R5 worked with producer-songwriters Emanuel “Eman” Kiriakou (Selena Gomez, Hot Chelle Rae) and Evan “Kidd” Bogart, who won a Grammy for writing the Beyonce hit, “Halo.” The team wrote three tracks for the band while R5 members Riker and Ross contributed an original.  

“Our basic mindset was that we wanted to make everyone feel excited and happy,” says Riker Lynch of the new EP. “It’s about driving down the highway with the top down and blasting music. We didn’t want anything too deep and dark.” 

The R5 story actually begins in the Denver suburb of Littleton, Colo. There, as a child, Riker got things started when he revealed a talent for singing. With Elvis, the Beatles and the Stones playing in background, soon Riker and his siblings started taking music seriously. Once they set on a show business career, the entire family moved to Los Angeles in 2007. The Lynch kids experienced success quickly, finding professional acting, dance and commercial opportunities.Though the Lynchs had their musical act down, something was missing: a drummer. That’s when they turned to friend Ellington Ratliff, who rounded out the line-up. 

For much of 2012, the band honed its performing chops, headlining club shows in Chicago, Phoenix, Toronto, New York, New Jersey and beyond. “There’s something cool that happens when we’re on stage together,” Riker says. “There’s nothing more fun in the world. We try to be very personable, and meet the entire audience after shows. Fans you meet on the road stick with you forever.” 

R5 boasts more than 150,000 Facebook page likes. Now that the EP is out, the band is set for a spring 2013 tour, though a national TV audience got a sneak peek when R5 performed at the Progressive Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular, broadcast on NBC. 

R5, undisputedly the teen band to watch in 2013. All fans have to do is turn it up loud. How’s that sound?
