In the climate of today’s music industry, a do it yourself attitude can go a long way. T. Mills knows this firsthand.

Born Travis Tatum Mills, the 22-year-old was able to turn laptop musical experimentation in his bedroom into national tours and a recording contract with Columbia Records, all in just over two years. But the rapid ascent didn’t come without plenty of work. From an early age, T. Mills was musically curious. As a kid growing up in California, he learned how to play guitar and drums, before soon getting into singing. With an eclectic array of sounds grounding him, it’s no wonder that T. Mills's music is not neatly classifiable, pulling from a number of different places. “I would call it a mesh between hip-hop, R&B, electronic and dance,” he says, before truncating the description. “I call it hip-pop.”

It took some time to hone that sound, though. At 15, he started what he calls an “experimental pop punk” band with friends and was overcome with his connection to music.Before long, he stopped going to high school and shifted his focus to independent studies and music. “Friday and Saturday, I'd sell tickets so I could play a show,” the SoCal singer recalls.“Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, we were going to my friends' bands or bands I looked up to. I was sneaking into clubs to go see rappers. I just wanted to be around music.”

Through an acquaintance and good timing, Mills landed himself a coveted spot on the summer-long Warped Tour 2009. Once he returned to the Pacific, Mills rode his early wave of success to book shows for himself at local venues. Then, one day, unexpectedly, the tattooed talent got a call from John D’Esposito, Live Nation’s vice president of talent and the founder of Bamboozle. D’Esposito asked the newbie to craft the theme song for the festival and, in return, gave him a spot on the B-Boy stage, which was also rocked by the likes of Mike Posner and Far East Movement. That Fall, he dropped the album Ready, Fire, Aim!, an independent project that was made available on iTunes and in select retail stores.

Now, as he preps his official debut album, he's looking towards growth and the future.

As the catchy, genre-bending songs continue to develop, you can try to classify T. Mills, but that doesn't matter. He's going to keep doing it his way, like he has all along.

American superstar Adam Lambert has announced that his second album ‘Trespassing’ will be released in the UK on March 19th, following the release the new single ‘Better Than I Know Myself’ on March 12th.

As well as executively producing the album, Adam collaborated with an all-star list of award winning artists, producers and songwriters on the record; including Pharrell Williams, Dr. Luke, Claude Kelly (who produced the new single), Benny Blanco, Bonnie McKee, Nile Rogers, Sam Sparro, Bruno Mars, Nikka Costa and BC Jean.

Adam continues to enjoy a huge amount of support from his army of loyal fans worldwide. The release of the single artwork alone caused a storm on Twitter, trending both in the UK and around the world. Anticipation for Adam’s new material was heightened in November of last year following his show-stopping performance with Queen at the MTV EMA Awards in Belfast, which saw Adam Lambert trending on Twitter in the UK.

Lambert describes ‘Trespassing’ as "an exciting journey through the past two years of my life.  It's been a transformative period and I really wanted to make music from what I've experienced.  All these songs honestly explore the ups and downs of my reality."

Having supported Will Young on his last sold-out UK tour and releasing her debut single, On The Road which received widespread praise, Jodie Marie’s is releasing ‘I Got You’ on the 27th February.

Hailing from a small town in South Wales, isolated and withdrawn from the pop charts, Jodie was raised on a diet of blues music and Bonnie Raitt. In her own music she combines these influences with her own unique, soulful sound, evoking the work of greats such as Joni Mitchell, Tim Buckley and Carole King. At times it seems impossible to think Jodie is a mere 20 years of age when her stunning voice can silence a crowd in seconds. 

Jodie’s potential was harnessed by Transgressive Management (the team behind Johnny Flynn, Foals and The Noisettes) and she was signed to Decca to re-launch the classic Verve record label, following a strong lineage of artists - from Nina Simone and Billie Holliday to the Velvet Underground. Jodie Maire is set to transcend trends and convention with her debut album (produced by Bernard Butler and Ed Harcourt) that will be released in March 2012. 

‘I Got You’ opens simply with stripped back piano, classic percussion and Jodie’s striking vocals, with which she takes you to the spell binding chorus with her voice taking second stage.

MTV UK + Ireland today announce Context (formerly known as Context MC) as the winner of the MTV Brand New for 2012 Unsigned Competition. The Norwich-born artist will fill the final coveted spot on the MTV Brand New for 2012 shortlist.

Public voting opens today at 4pm via www.mtv.co.uk/brandnew with the overall MTV Brand New for 2012 winner announced on February 1. 

With a dubstep & hip-hop feel that's bang on the money, Context is inspired as much by the low-key Bristol sounds of Portishead and Massive Attack as London-based producers like James Blake, The Streets or Burial.  

Our judging panel were blown away by Context's abilities (everything is self-written and produced) and proactive approach to the industry. Over the past few years he's received incredible support from MTV Base and MTV's The Wrap Up as well as from BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra and SBTV.

To achieve all this without any kind of team is seriously impressive and demonstrates the kind of skill and ambition that new artists need to have in the modern day music industry.

His competition entry 'Listening To Burial’ is one of those rare tunes that makes you want to hit repeat and stay all day. Be sure to also check out previous tracks 'Off With Their Heads' (the video of which features a cameo from Ed Sheeran) and the sublime forthcoming single 'Drowning’.

It’s the first time ever that an unsigned artist has been included in the prestigious annual new music shortlist.

Over 2,500 unsigned artists entered the competition upon its launch in November before a long-list of 500 were picked out for a public vote. Following this, 15,000 unique votes were placed, whittling the entries down to a shortlist of 20 artists before MTV's talent, music programming and editorial staff decided on an overall winner. On the January 24 and 25, MTV is set to host two exclusive gigs showcasing nominated artists and established UK stars at London’s KOKO. On the January 24 headliners The Maccabees will play tracks from their critically acclaimed new album Given to the Wild. Lana Del Rey, playing material from her hugely anticipated debut album released the same week, and the hotly tipped electro-goth pioneer Charli XCX will also perform. With one of the most successful track-records for a new music poll, in the last 4 years MTV Brand New has identified international stars such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber & Ke$ha before their debut releases whilst also picking up top British music talent Tinie Tempah, Adele, Florence + The Machine, Ellie Goulding, Jessie J, Friendly Fires, White Lies, Wretch 32 & Labrinth at the very start of their recording careers. 

Paul has apparently had some fun with his choice of album title - while causing some confusion amongst those who have historically subjected his every move to microscopic scrutiny (with many fixating on an anatomical interpretation!). The phrase ‘Kisses On The Bottom,’ however, actually comes from the album’s opener ‘I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter’. Originally made a big hit by Fats Waller in 1935, the song opens with the lines "I’m gonna sit right down and write myself a letter and make believe it came from you. I’m gonna write words oh so sweet. They’re gonna knock me off of my feet.  A lot of kisses on the bottom, I’ll be glad I got ‘em’".
 

‘Kisses On The Bottom’ is a collection of standards Paul grew up listening to in his childhood as well as the two new McCartney compositions ‘My Valentine’ and ‘Only Our Hearts’. With the help of Grammy Award-winning producer Tommy LiPuma and Diana Krall and her band—as well as guest appearances from Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder, McCartney’s new album is a deeply personal journey through classic American compositions that, in some cases, a young Paul first heard his father perform on piano at home. The full tracklisting reveals that Paul has been both reverent and adventurous in his song choices.

The album was recorded at the legendary Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, New York and London throughout 2011. It also features guest musicians Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder, respectively, on the original compositions ‘My Valentine’ and ‘Only Our Hearts’. Eric also appears on the track ‘Get Yourself Another Fool’.

The album artwork concept was conceived by Jonathan Schofield (Visual Director at Stella McCartney) and designed by Matthew Cooper (who has worked with artists such as Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand).  

Paul was photographed by his daughter Mary McCartney for the album sleeve.

As the excitement builds before this year’s hugely anticipated BRIT Awards 2012, the nominations will be announced this week in an exclusive press launch party at The Savoy Hotel.

The launch will take place on Thursday 12th January. It will be hosted by Greg James with an introduction made by BRITs host James Corden and will feature exclusive live performances on the night from Ed Sheeran and the 2012 Critics’ Choice winner Emeli Sandé.
